As a homeowner, you want to make sure that your living space is as safe as possible for your family all year around. As we are entering the colder months, we will be relying more on our heaters and fireplace, which can be a fire hazard. From your kitchen to your furnace, each home has fire hazards that can be easily prevented. Luckily, there are a few simple tips you can follow so that you can prevent a fire from occurring your home.
Focus On Smoke Detectors
When it comes to keeping your home safe, you need to make sure you have properly working smoke detectors installed. Two-thirds of all fire deaths occur in home with a non-functioning alarm or no alarm at all. So, it is critical that you install at least one fire alarm on every floor of your home, including one outside your kitchen and one in every bedroom. Make sure that you replace the batteries in your alarm once a year and that you are testing each alarm once a month.
Stay Alert In The Kitchen
It is essential that you are aware of your surroundings and staying alert while you are cooking your kitchen. Cooking leads to more house fire than any other single task, so be safe when cooking with oils on the stove. It is imperative that you stay in the kitchen while the stove and oven are on; meaning you should never leave the space while cooking. You want to keep your kitchen as clean as possible, especially around the stove and burners. The last thing you want is grease build-up leading to a fire.
Blow Out Candles
Even though they are often small and seem harmless, candles can be the cause of major housefires. So, it is essential that you stay in the room while candles are lit and remember to blow them out once you leave the room. You want to keep all combustible items at least one foot away from a lit candle. Make sure you place your candles on a sturdy surface.
