Health Issues Associated With Mold Exposure

Discover a few of the health issues associated with mold exposure.

As a homeowner, you want to ensure that you are cultivating a healthy and safe environment for your entire family.  You need to keep an eye on the amount of moisture and humidity levels in your home.  If you are not careful, mold can form in your home, which can cause harmful health issues.  The last thing you want is for your family to get sick from untreated mold.  You should be aware of a few of the health issues that associated with mold exposure.

Asthma

Many of mold symptoms and health issues are associated with a respiratory response.  Exposure to mold can cause asthma symptoms, or trigger a flare-up in those that already have asthma.  The symptoms of asthma include coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. If you have asthma, make sure you are prepared with an inhaler and other supplies in the case of a severe asthma attack.

Allergic Reactions

Depending on the severity of the mold in your home, the body will react to mold through an allergic reaction.  Allergic reactions to mold spores can range from a minor respiratory irritation to a full-blown sickness. A minor mold allergy consists of sneezing and itchy nose, ears, and throat.  A severe allergic reaction mold, specifically black mold, will show signs of nausea, vomiting, and bleeding in the lungs and nose. If any of these symptoms persist, especially the bleeding, you should seek medical attention immediately.

Prevention

No one wants to get sick from mold exposure, so you need to learn how to prevent mold from forming in the first place.  Mold form from spaces with excess moisture and limited air circulation, such as your basement. So, you want to make sure the entire area is as dry as possible and well ventilated.  Make sure you are fixing any leaks as quickly as possible.
