3 Tips To Preventing Home Water Damage

Learn how to prevent water damage in your home.

As a homeowner, you want to ensure that your home is clean and safe on a daily basis.  If you are not careful, your home can become a victim of water damage.  Whether it is a leaky pipe or severe flooding, water damage can be costly to clean up and treat.  The last thing you want is for a small section of water damage to lead to serious mold growth.  Luckily, there are a few simple tips for preventing water damage from occurring in your home.

Focus On Your Gutters

When it comes to preventing water damage on your property, you need to focus on cleaning out your gutters, especially during the fall.  Fall is known for leaves dropping from trees and an increase in rain and storms. The last thing you want is for your gutters to be clogged with leaves and debris while it is heavily raining.  It will result in water overflowing onto your home’s siding and foundation, which can lead to serious water damage. So, you want to clean out your gutters with a scoop several times during the autumn season.  You also want to ensure that your gutter’s downspout is directing water at least 10 feet from your home’s foundation.

Inspect and Repair Leaks

One of the most effective ways to prevent water damage from occurring is to go around your home and inspect and repair any leaks, no matter how small.  You want to check your pipes, especially the ones that are in your cabinets. Mold forms quickly in small dark spaces with minimal insulation, such as cabinets.  You also want to check your roof for any loose shingles or insufficient insulation. So, the sooner you fix any leaks in your home, the chance for water damage decreases.

Check Your Appliances

When it comes to preventing water damage, you want to keep an eye on all of your appliances.  Broken appliances, such as your refrigerator or washing machine, can lead to water damage that you may not notice until it is too late  So, you want to inspect your devices on a regular basis, and you might have to update an appliance if it is outdated.
