3 Simple Ways To Prevent A Kitchen Fire

Learn how to prevent a kitchen fire.

We are coming to the end of the holiday season, which means you will be cooking homemade meals for your family and friends during the next few weeks.  It is important to stay alert and safe while cooking so that you can prevent a dangerous fire.  According to the United States Fire Administration, over 164,000 residential cooking fires occur every year.  Luckily, there are a few simple tips you can follow so that you can stay safe in your kitchen while cooking.

Stay Alert

When it comes to preventing a kitchen fire, you need to stay alert while cooking.  It is essential that you do no leave your kitchen while your stove, oven, or any heat source is on.  If you need to leave the kitchen while cooking, make sure to turn the heat source off even if you are leaving for a minute.  The last thing you want is for a fire to erupt because you left for a phone call. It is best if you set a timer while cooking and check on your food regularly.

Keep It Clean

One of the most important aspects of kitchen fire safety is creating a clean environment.  You want to clean your stove tops and oven regularly removing food debris and spills. You want to ensure that you get rid of built-up grease, especially on your stove, which is leading a cause of kitchen fires.  Make sure you are cleaning your pots and pans between each use to ensure all oil and grease is gone.

Stop It Quickly

It is important that you know how to stop a small fire from spreading in your kitchen.  It is essential that you have a smoke detector installed right outside of your kitchen. Make sure that you have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen so that you can put out fires quickly.  If it is a grease fire, do not put it out with water. It is best to put it out with baking soda or smother it with a pot lid.
