3 Christmas Tree Safety Tips

Follow these simple Christmas tree safety tips.

Christmas is only a few weeks away, so make sure you go out and set up a tree in your home, if you haven’t already.  Setting up and decorating a Christmas tree is one of the main ways people show their holiday spirit.  However, it is essential that you stay safe when caring for and decorating your tree.  According to the American Christmas Tree Association, Christmas trees result in around $13 million worth of property damage a year.  Luckily, there are a few simple safety tips you can follow so that you can have a memorable Christmas.

Know What To Pick

It is essential that you know what to look for when choosing a Christmas tree to put up in your home.  When it comes to choosing a tree, you want to look for a fresh one with vibrant, green needles that are hard to pluck.  Avoid choosing a tree with needles that fall of easily. Before you place the tree on a stand, you want to cut two inches off of the base.

Care For It Properly

When it comes to having a Christmas tree, you need to know how to care for it properly.  You want to water your tree on a daily basis. A tree that is at least six feet tall needs around a gallon of water every two days.  It is important that you know where to place your tree. Make sure that your tree is at least five feet from any heat sources, such as a radiator or fireplace.  You want to avoid your tree from blocking an exit.

Lighting The Tree

One of the most important safety tips involves lighting your tree.  When lighting your tree, make sure that you have lights that are suited for indoors; avoid using lights manufactured for outdoor use.  You want to avoid overheating an outlet, so make sure you are using one string of lights per outlet. Remember to turn off the lights before leaving your home and before going to bed.
